Restaurant Sabang Merauke is a true culinary gem nestled quietly within a residential area on Jl. Tomat No.2 Darat, Medan Baru, Kota Medan. Specializing in authentic Manado cuisine, this humble eatery delivers a memorable taste of Indonesia’s vibrant North Sulawesi flavors through a home-cooked approach that warms the soul as much as the palate.
The restaurant may be discreetly tucked away inside what looks like a typical house, but stepping inside feels like visiting a dear grandparent’s kitchen—simple, unpretentious, and overflowing with the genuine aroma of slow-cooked, heartfelt dishes. There is no air conditioning here, and the decor is far from flashy; yet this rustic ambiance adds to the charm, inviting guests to savor every bite in an intimate, comforting environment.
The menu is carefully curated, with standout offerings that keep patrons coming back. Among the most celebrated dishes is the bistik ayam—a tender, succulent chicken steak that Jansen Marnyo has proudly named his favorite. The chicken is marinated and cooked to perfection, delivering a harmonious balance of savory and subtly sweet flavors that linger delightfully on the tongue. Another must-try is their prawn dishes, celebrated for their freshness and rich seasoning that echo traditional Chinese-influenced Manado cuisine.
While the food is unquestionably the star, it is important to note that Restaurant Sabang Merauke operates on a limited schedule—open only from Wednesday to Saturday, 12 pm to 3 pm—and patrons are encouraged to order in advance due to limited manpower. This exclusivity adds an element of anticipation and specialness to the dining experience, almost like uncovering a well-kept secret where every dish is crafted with care and attention.
Customers often highlight the quality and safety of the food, emphasizing how the restaurant’s dedication to high-quality ingredients shines through each dish. The experience here goes beyond flavor—it’s about feeling at home and indulging in authentic regional cuisine prepared with love and tradition. Though the building itself may be modest and somewhat worn, the heartwarming service and unforgettable taste create a dining moment that stays with you long after the meal ends.
For adventurous food lovers seeking genuine Manado flavors in Medan, Restaurant Sabang Merauke offers a rare and intimate glimpse into a culinary heritage that feels both comforting and excitingly authentic. Just be prepared to embrace a dining experience that’s as much about soul food as it is about savoring new tastes.

Great manado cuisine. Yet my favorite would be its bistik ayam. Fyi, they are operating only from Wednesday to Saturday 12pm - 3pm. Gotta order in advance due to lack of manpower.

This hidden restaurant is really hard to find as it sits within residential area and from the front looks like a normal house. They serve Chinese Manado style dishes and everything tasted like home cooked food! Place is run down and no air-conditioning so it felt like you went to your grandparents place to have a meal. The prawn and the bistik are a must try here. Food - 8 Service - 7 Vibe - 6 Price - $$$
